Although it is perfectly possible to while away your holiday on the houseboat, you will probably want to see more of Srinagar and the surrounding areas. A relaxing way to do so is on a round-trip to the Shalimar Bagh by shikara - a graceful, gondola- type boat with comfortable cushions and shady curtains - exploring Lakes Nagin and Dal on the way. The Shalimar Bagh was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife, Nur Jahan, in 1619. It is considered to be a wonderful example of Mughal horticulture and is now a public park.

A visit to Srinagar's Old Town, steeped in a history dating back to the 3rd century BC, includes a visit to Jama Masjid, one of Kashmir's oldest mosques. You could also get active with a hike up to the Hari Parbat Fort, a Mughal structure dating back to the 18th century.

Rise early to witness the dawn vegetable market where trading is conducted entirely from shikaras on the water. Alternatively, take the handicrafts tour and visit a traditional papier-mache workshop, woodcarving centre, Kashmir carpet and honey shops.

Being spring-fed, Lake Nagin's crystal clear water is perfect for swimming. Hire a shikara to take you out to one of the Swimming Boats in the middle of the lake where you can sunbathe, swim and water ski. You can also purchase refreshments on board. Prices vary according to the Swimming Boat. Alternatively, ask your boat boy if you can borrow the small shikara available for your use and you can paddle yourself to a suitable spot and dive in.

For those who enjoy golf, there are two 18-hole courses on which to play: The Royal Springs Golf Club in Srinagar designed by Robert Trent Jones III is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful golf courses in Asia. The view from the fairways of Lake Dal and the pine-covered mountain peaks is truly breathtaking. The historic golf course in Gulmarg is the highest course in the world at an altitude of 2,650 metres and playing there could be included in a day trip to Gulmarg. All equipment can be hired.

While you are here, take the opportunity to ski at Gulmarg, one of the highest lift-served ski resorts in the world. Known as Kashmir's premier upland hill resort, the valley of Gulmarg stands at an altitude of 2,650 metres. The resorts caters to all skill levels from absolute beginners to advanced skiers and is considered to be the cheapest place in the world to learn how to ski.

Full day trips take you further afield into the foothills of the Himalayas where you can walk, go for pony rides and fish. There are various places you can visit and you will be taken on a return trip by car with packed lunch included. This is a great way to see the mountains close up if you prefer not to do a mountain trek. Just let us know what you are interested in doing and we will plan it all for you.
